Why is it important your vehicle is built by a manufacturer like Bespoke who holds Whole Vehicle Type Approval?
VCA Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) is a UK certification process by the Vehicle Certification Agency that confirms a new vehicle type meets international safety, security, and environmental standards, allowing the manufacturer to produce it and self-certify subsequent production vehicles.
The Whole Vehicle Type Approval process involves:
- Comprehensive Assessment: A designated approval authority conducts tests to ensure the vehicle as a whole meets all safety, environmental, and performance requirements.
- Safety Testing: This includes crash tests and checks of braking performance and stability control. It ensures a vehicle’s design complies with relevant legislation, covering aspects like emissions, brakes, and safety features, and confirms that production vehicles consistently match the approved design.
In contrast, Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) is for one-off or low-volume vehicles, requiring an individual inspection for each unregistered vehicle. IVA is less stringent while WVTA is a more rigorous, streamlined process for high-volume manufacturers.
How can I check if a company has Whole Vehicle Type Approval?
The register of GB type approvals can be found at the VCA website link below.
You will find our company listed as OB Spoke Services Ltd (T/A Bespoke Leisure).

Are there any other benefits of Whole Vehicle Type Approval?
The key importance is of course safety, however in addition a vehicle that has Whole Vehicle Type Approval will have a M1 classification on the vehicle log book.
This means that the vehicle can be driven at the speed limit of a car, as opposed to a commercial vehicle. When buying your vehicle this may be a good question to check with the seller.

The Motorhome Qualification Scheme sets the benchmark for standards in motorhome and camper conversions market. We have combined legislative, regulatory and industry standards into one qualification so you can buy with confidence, after all it is still a Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle.
Motorhome and campervan converters have to meet our rigorous high standards to gain their place on the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Motorhome Qualification Scheme. This includes having their vehicle meet legal type approval standards allowing first registration as a campervan or motorhome, not as a panel van. They must also have gained approval from the National Caravan Council (NCC) who govern habitation standards and safety of your converted campervan.
And as you would expect, we insist that converters match the term of our base warranty too.
